Did referee cause Oilers to give up a goal?
The officials in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final might be grateful they’re in Florida instead of Edmonton. Three minutes into the second period, Florida Panthers forward Sam Reinhart potted his first goal of the Final, putting it bar-down past Edmonton Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner to restore his team’s two-goal lead. And though Carter Verhaeghe was credited with the primary assist, the secondary could belong to referee Francis Charron after the official got in the way of the Oilers’ defence. As Oilers blueliner John Klingberg tried skating it up along the boards while being pressured by Aleksander Barkov, Charron was late to get out of the way and Klingberg wound up falling into him. That led led to a loose puck which Verhaeghe picked up, gave to Reinhart, and then made its way to the back of the net. Even worse for the Oilers was that the play came only 1:20 after Corey Perry netted his team’s first goal of the game, cutting into the Panthers’ 2-0 lead and restoring some momentum for Edmonton. After the deflating Reinhart goal, Sam Bennett went on to score his fourth goal of the series less than five minutes later, building the Panthers’ lead up to 4-1 midway through the second frame.
