Eddie Alvarez - the greatest fighter ever?

No, he probably isn't. But he probably is, at the same time. What on earth do I mean? Well, I have been thinking about Eddie for a while now and... I have seen this cat fight forever. The first fight I ever saw him in was in the short-lived BodogFight (what was that - they must have been criminals, right?) and he beat Aaron Riley. This is so long ago it's crazy, it was back in 2006, folks. Yes, I am very old. Anyways. The next fight of consequence from the man I call one of the greatest, if not greatest, fighters of all time, was his all-time crazy awesome fight with Joachim Hansen back in the Dream Lightweight Grand Prix - a fight in a legendary tournament where he couldn't fight in the finals and let Joachim take his place - and Joachim won against Shinya Aoki in a great little fight. Anyhoo. All this time, some crazy lady is screaming, at least that is what my memory tells me all the time. At this time he is 15-1. Back in 2008, people. Then he goest to Bellator and just delivers consistently. Slobberknockers. 8-1 from 2009 to 2011 where he loses to Michael Chandler in what was then the fight of the year, if I am not mistaken. Then the madman avenges a loss to Shinya Aoki, head-kick KOs Pitbull and then beats Chandler in the rematch, another fight of the year type of thing, as usual. Wow. But Eddie just keeps on keeping. Loses to Cerrone in what was frankly a pretty bad fight for Eddie. I blame that on Cerrone. Just kidding. But Cerrone at the time was considered very elite. This fight was before his combo of death vs Rick Story, for instance. Cerrone is another one of those "not the best ever but have you seen his fucking resumé?" type of fighters that only exist in dreams and legends. He then beats Giblret, Pettis and somehow completely smokes Dos Anjos to get the most prestigious belt at the time, holding it for one second before losing it to famous coke head and nation shamer McGregor. But was he done? No! He almost wins against Poirier before commit a Peter Yan-level of foul and getting disqualified. Bad look. But then he smokes Gaethje, whould could've thunk it? Then he closes out his UFC career witha TKO loss vs Poirier, keeps on keeping for a while in ONE FC, notorious tax evasion scheme of an organisation... So, over 22 years the man has graced us with some super duper top notch fights, 40 of them actually, and they have just been fucking awesome. If you don't consider this guy a true legend, I just don't know what gets you up in the morning. Share me your best Eddie Alvarez memories! submitted by /u/lavaeater [link] [comments]
