If Alexander Volkanovski and Ilia Topuria Fought Again What Would Volk Have To Change To Win?

Title^ Obviously it’s more than likely that these two men will never face each other in the octagon again and with Topuria moving to 155lbs and Volk comfortably making 145lbs as the current champ. With that said the consensus is that Ilia is a nightmare matchup for Volk with his relentless pressure, fast hands, long combos and counters If they were to face each other again how could Volkanovski go about winning this bout? What do you think his coaches would recommend he work on or change completely in a theoretical second fight? My guess would be that he would have to stay on the outside and avoid the pocket with Ilia for damn near the full 25min and fight a perfect fight, while also landing strong early shots to get more respect from Topuria. Round 1 Alex won through lead body kicks and keeping his distance, but that relentless pressure and lack of respect from Topuria lead to him being able to walk Volk down and catch him with his chin in the air. Cus D’mato (Mike Tyson’s trainer) gave advice to Muhammad Ali before his fight with George Foreman, saying that he needed to hit Foreman hard early to get his respect. I think this would be really important I also think that Volk wasn’t utilizing his leg kicks much in their bout. With the first 2 Holloway fights he very effectively damaged Holloways leg and forced him to go southpaw. Topuria stands orthodox, heavy on the lead leg and bladed which gives a clear target to ruin his base. I think that compromising his legs would play great dividends in taking sting off Topuria’s shots as the fight goes on Then there’s the question of Volk employing his own grappling. Topuria definitely has more matt time and skill than Volkonovski in regard to grappling but I still think some takedown attempts with the possibility of ending up on top of Topuria or just to mix his attack up could have Topuria a lot less confident in pushing as hard of a pace What do you guys think? submitted by /u/Crispy_Sock_99 [link] [comments]
