OKTAGON MMA promoter reveals relationship with UFC
“Our way of communicating is through lawsuits,” the Oktagon promoter admitted in an interview with Real Talk. “But that’s our long-standing joke, which we poke at each other. The UFC is known for setting the playing field as aggressively and as hard as possible,” he added. “I guess we’re done with it, although there’s still something going on between us, but it’s never quite reached the final. We always just talk to each other... or they threaten us and we hit them back, if I may put it that way, and we always set the playing field for ourselves rather than do what they want us to do,” the promoter explained. Ondřej Novotný admitted that they gave in to the overseas organization on two issues, for example, in the case of the shape of the cage – the UFC claimed the shape of an octagon, and the yellow-black organization uses a circle for that. Novotný kept the other issue to himself. However, they did not back down on the organization's name, which the UFC reportedly demanded to be changed. However, the promoter pointed out that, in addition to the legal inconveniences, these steps by the UFC mean that the world number one is registering them, which says something. "At the moment when they started playing this, it was a kind of reward for us," said Novotný. "They speak about us, which is not done in our business. (...) I never name organizations I shouldn't recognize, meaning smaller organizations," explained the Oktagon promoter. "We send each other those spies, even though we don't, because I recognize those gods and I recognize that the UFC is an unattainable phenomenon that, like any empire, can fall, but I don't see it here at all, quite rightly," admitted Novotný. Despite all the inconveniences, the Oktagon management still recognizes the UFC as the world's top. "Uncle Dana is undoubtedly the best person in his position of all time, he is a source of inspiration to me. I scold him many times, saying, I would have done this differently, but then it turns out that he was actually right and saw things before others," added Novotný.
