Strikers are responsible for the boring wrestling going on in the ufc
So we saw in 313 as well, theres a new style of wrestling going on in ufc: instead of going for takedowns, then position the submission like you would traditionnaly in mma, its becoming sort of common for athletes to use their wrestling as just a defensive tool, to stall the fight when they are getting hit. They just hold on to a takedown attempt, if they get it they wait on top, etc. But why is that ? Well my take is its (at least partly) because of strikers. In the case of takedown attempts that go on for a long time, these guys know that if they just stall and try their best not to interact with grappling, they 1- will get the public to hate their opponent, because for some reason this type of situation is seen as the wrestlers fault, even though the strikers are stalling just as much and 2- if they cry long enough not to grapple the ref might separate the 2 athletes for free. Strikers are literally encouraged to stall by the rules, this is what you saw in 313 and im telling you its what youre gonna see again and again in the next months/years. this type of strategy of just waiting may not work if the ref wasnt gonna separate the athletes or if they started in the position they left after each round. Strikers would have to engage with the grappling in order to escape, otherwise theyd just be waiting the whole match. They could Also learn to keep their offense going by learning grappling. Thats another reason this is happening by the way: incomplete fighters. Have you ever seen topuria stall against the goddamn fence on a takedown attempt ? No. And you never will, because even though his strength is boxing, the guy is not afraid to grapple and he knows how to do it. If fighters learned how to grapple we would have very fluid transitions from one state to the next. I do believe this is how this issue is eventually gonna be resolved: once everyone knows grappling at a high enough level there will be no need to stall against the fence on td attempts. Also on the ground, fighters will be able to focus on offense if they down have to constantly worry about 1- looking like shits getting done to the ref, otherwise hes gonna stand em up and 2- keeping their unwilling grappling partners on the ground. submitted by /u/soosisse [link] [comments]
