Thoughts on Jones 2020 before UFC 247
I had to clean up some of my files. What seems like ages ago I was making attempts to write articles about fights, fighters etc. I happened to stumble upon my first draft for an article I wrote about Jones vs. Reyes. (maybe I was applying for a job, I don't recall). Anyways, I hope you can use a laugh. TLDR: Jones should have a fresh start at Heavyweight. UFC 247 Title: Why you should be rooting for Dominick Reyes at UFC 247. Dominick Reyes is the UFC Octagon for the 7th time in his career carrying a current undefeated streak of 12-0 (at location) (date). Reyes will be taking on the current light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones who, if you ignore the picograms, multiple run ins with the law, and title strips due to disciplinary action, is on a current 17 fight win streak. We’re all very aware of the dangers that Jones will bring to the octagon. In other news, rain is wet and Jones (again) is a heavy favorite to win this Saturday night. However, lets agree rain is itchy and put on our tinfoil headgear and examine why, the light heavyweight crown should be passed to Reyes. The light Heavyweight division is, well, \yawn*. UFC 247 is another card, where Jon has* to not only carry the grunt of the card but also the division. This card features exactly “0” other light heavyweight fights. After this fight the rankings should shuffle, but there is justification that even if Jones takes the L, he could still be the #2 fighter in the division. You could, not even stretching that far, justify him still being #1 in the division. The light heavyweight division had two names enter the division recently, Luke Rockhold and Chris Weidman, who both made quick exits due to losses. What about Thiago Santos, that fight after all went to split decision with Jones, right? The answer is simple, Jones has shown us already what happens to when he faces an opponent for a second time. Thanks, but no thanks. If Jones takes the loss against Reyes, I think the teasing of him moving to heavyweight becomes reality. The reality of him holding two belts at the same time, doesn’t. The UFC Heavyweight division could us that spark of Jones vs. Stipe solidifies how great Stipe is by dethroning DC and Jones, or if Jones wins, use that energy to put a much needed spotlight on the heavyweight division. The heavyweight division just has more names, more characters, that can make for some exciting fights for Jones. With the UFC Heavyweight belt, Jon Jones gets a fresh start. A fresh start, of many fresh starts, but it will be at the UFC Heavyweight division where, the current longest defense of that belt is a whole three fights. Jones move to the heavyweight will garner as much, if not more then when Randy Couture went on to dethrone Tim Sylvia for the heavyweight title back in 2007. - UFC Light Heavyweight division needs to produce some more contenders. - The UFC Light Heavyweight division will exchange belts several times in Jones absence. - Jones can always return to claim his previous throne at Light Heavyweight. - Jones can get a super fresh start at Heavyweight Division and break the current streak of 3 fights. - Healthy, high possibility will be defending the Heavyweight belt more than one time a year. - Way more appealing fighters for Jones at Heavyweight than Light Heavyweight submitted by /u/NotSoSuperShay [link] [comments]
