Jeff Blashill has been named the team’s head coach for his second stint as an NHL bench boss, sources tell Sportsnet.
Blashill’s last head coaching job was with the Detroit Red Wings, where he was the team’s head coach from 2015 to 2022 after taking over for Mike Babcock. The Red Wings made a playoff appearance in Blashill’s first season, then entered an extensive rebuild that has yet to result in a return to the post-season.
The 51-year-old has spent the past three seasons with the Tampa Bay Lightning as an assistant coach on Jon Cooper’s staff.
Blashill has also spent time as the head coach of the Red Wings’ AHL affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins from 2012 to 2015, winning a Calder Cup in 2013 and helping key prospects make the jump to the NHL.
Chicago was looking for a coach after firing Luke Richardson in December. Anders Sorensen filled in on an interim basis for the remainder of the regular season as the Blackhawks missed the playoffs, finishing second-last in the Western Conference with a 25-46-11 record.
